My Semi-exculsive Interview with Music Mogul DJ Quik

The bleachers shook as the many students stomped and danced in the crowd to the rhythmic sensation of DJ Quik’s performance at the Pep Rally held in the Walter Pyramid on Feb. 22. Moments before the legendary rapper took to the floor to perform, DJ Quik was available for a brief interview.

Being heralded as one of the most extraordinary producers to come out of the crime-ridden streets of Compton, DJ Quik (David Martin Blake) described the difference between his style of gangster rap from other gangster rap artists like Biggie Smalls and Tu Pac, both rappers which ultimately died from gangster-like violence.
According to DJ Quik, artists such as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Easy-E, and himself are more of the theatrical aspect of the gangster rap realm, stating that they are “really about the fun of going out and being like gangster portrayers.”

Getting his start by the success of underground mix-tapes in the late 1980s, DJ Quik also touched on his ability to adapt to the new changes in rap over the years.
“[I] just keep my ear to the street,” said Quik, “To my closest people about my production because you know they’ll be honest with me and [I can] see what they like and see what they don’t like.”

The seemingly laid back, jewelry clad rapper ended the interview with an energetic “GO BEACH!”
